Your Diet May Be Keeping You Awake

You've heard the old adage, you are what you eat... well, this adage applies to sleep too. There are foods that when consumed would keep you awake or ruin the quality of your sleep.  Chocolate for example, does that.  Below is a list of foods that are believed or proven to cause sleeplessness.  You may be surprised by some of these:

  • Soy sauce
  • Salami
  • Pickles
  • Oatmeal
  • Hot sauces
  • Fatty food

There are also foods that are believe to promote sleep examples are:

  • Milk, turkey and eggs contain tryptophan, an amino acid that promotes sleep
  • Cherries are natural source of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep and wakefulness (the more melatonin, the sleepier you become)

Not only what you eat impacts your sleep but also when you eat would wreck your sleep quality.
